New Simonyi Chair appointed (Oxford University Press Office):
Professor Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, has been appointed to the Charles Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science. [...] The new appointment will take effect from 1 December 2008. The aim of the professorship is to communicate science to the public, with elements of scholarship that bring true understanding.
I haven't read any of Prof. du Sautoy's books, but I did see his Royal Society lectures the year before last and was quite impressed with them. Let's hope he proves to be more dedicated to his post, and less to ideological crusadeds, than his
predecessor.

You may be interested to know mate, that du Sautoy wrote the 'Diary' column in this week's Spectator where he discusses this very subject. I can give you a précis if you like, but otherwise I recommend reading it for yourself - it's both encouraging and flawed.

Based on his diary entry, it seems that du Sautoy is not really deeply interested in the God question one way or the other, even personally. I hope that changes. I also hope he learns the distinction between "evangelical" and "evangelistic".
